Eagle
lake
Park
project

Eagle
Lake
Park
is near Frazee in
Becker
County
and was experiencing some erosion near the boat ramp and swimming area.
The sandy bank to the swimming area was being eroded through foot traffic
down to the lake. Water runoff from
uphill was cutting away at the bank. Snowmobile
and 4-Wheeler activity during the winter removed vegetation and eroded bank.
As well as the adverse water quality concerns, the picnic shelter was
being jeopardized. The boat ramp
asphalt is coming apart and eroding with big holes, making it unstable.
It is the only access to
Eagle
Lake
.
Phase I, Shoreline Erosion project was
begun on June 1 when a construction contractor with a tracked swing backhoe was
hired and moved on to the site to begin work.
The bank was shaped; large rock was placed at the base of the bank to act
as a physical barrier for foot traffic and toe protection.
Top soil was then spread over the bank so that native grasses and forbs
could be planted into proper soil. On
June 2nd Sentence to Serve from
Becker
County
arrived and assisted with raking the area to bury seed and staking the straw
erosion blanket to the bank. They
also assisted with putting in a split rail fence and planting Hansen’s Hedge
Rose in front of the fence as well as laying fabric down over the row of roses.
A beautiful, hopefully non destructible set of rock steps were completed.
These were the most expensive part of the project, but should last a long
time. Railings were constructed to
keep the public off the seeded area.
There was increased use of the park due to
the T.V. spots and news article and less vandalism as people are now watching
the park. About $3,800 was raised
from fundraisers, Arvig Telephone Company and TIP.
Phase 2 will be the boat ramp for 2006.
The ramp has been temporarily fixed but money will have to be raised to
permanently fix the boat ramp.
